The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

A Little Vegas at ParksideZ

Who could miss the new sign at the old Mansoob's? I guess a deli owner has to invest to stand out from the crowd. The Q suspects that the neighbors of the oddly but memorably named ParksideZ who move in upstairs won't be pleased. Fiesta on Flatbush!

Also there's Barber Boyz and Kidz Plaza (at Phat Albert Warehouse). Using the "z" is so late 80s dated. Very Do the Right Thing and bike shorts and big hair.

It is as cheap and tacky as the day is long.

Aren't there rules and restrictions on the sizes and types of signs that stores are allowed to put up? It's obvious that whatever agency is in charge of enforcing that doesn't give a damn about PLG. The Parksidezzzzzz is just the latest and ugliest of many around here.

it's embarrassing for PLG.

How about the after-school program at the church on Fenimore and Rogers - Eyes on the Priz. Seriously? After school? Shouldn't they at least learn proper English?

But some of the shop names and signs are really clever too! There's a wig shop on Church called 'Buy Buy Hair.' That just works on so many levels...

I found this sign...sort of mesmerizing. In an awful way. I feel bad for the guys at Family Pizza who have to look at it all day.

This corner was the site of the very first shooting I heard after I moved here 5+ years ago. I'm just hoping that all of the brightness discourages the shady gatherings that used to take place there. I'd rather have ugly and bright, but safe.
